Child Life and School Services
In 1936, The Montreal Children’s Hospital was one of the first pediatric hospitals in North America to open a Child Life Department. The services available to patients and their families have evolved greatly over the years.
Child Life specialists help infants, children, adolescents and their families find ways to cope with the stress of the hospital experience by focusing on the ‘child’ in each patient. By facilitating opportunities for play in playrooms and at the bedside, providing developmentally appropriate hands-on teaching about medical interventions and encouraging self-expression, these professionals promote positive health care experience. Supervising in playrooms, animating activities on the roof terrace during the summer and maintaining the Family Resource Library are all Child Life staff responsibilities.
Child Life professionals work on the in-patient wards as well as in certain clinics or Day Treatment areas. They organize activities to help children deal with their treatments or simply to help pass the time and improve the quality of life in the hospital.
Special Education teachers help to normalize the hospital stay by assisting elementary- and secondary-level students in keeping up with their schoolwork while they are hospitalized.
